With a 75? opening angle, the spring action assists in both lifting and closing the box and provides "hold security" in both positions. Springs are easily removed from the hinge. A single spring will accommodate a lid up to 13" in height and approximately 6 lb in weight. For larger and heavier lids, use the springs on both sides.
